So be it, Jedi.

November already? Jumping jellyfish, that happened fast.

October has always been one of my favorite months. For most of my life, that was because I loved Halloween so much, and my birthday was something of a bonus. In the last seven years, however, October has been one of my favorite months — in some years, perhaps my favorite — because of cross country. This season, which for me will end this coming Saturday when I race in Rhode Island, has been my best ever, both in terms of performance and, simply put, fun.

Last weekend, I raced at NESCACs (our conference championship meet) for the first time. Top twelve on the team race, and I was 13th or slower the last two years, but no longer. The course was a beauty, right on the ocean in southeastern Connecticut. We placed second out of eleven.
I'm not close enough to the front of the pack to be in this picture, but the point here is that we raced right by the water.
This dude. Looks so much like Chuck.
The night before the meet, we drove down to Connecticut and watched two movies on the bus. The first was Miracle, a NESCACs tradition, but the second was The Notebook, a predictable backlash pick by the women's team after having to endure the clearly superior sports movie. The only reason I bring this up is because it was unanimously decided that the main guy in The Notebook looks a lot like Chuck, particularly when they both have beards. I am forced to agree.

I beat up some friends in Hearts the night after the meet, and then played a very good game of Spades myself — hit all of my bids, yada yada yada — but my partner had never played before, and his awfulness was consequently more than I could carry, and we lost. I don't forget, Chuck. I don't forget.

GIS is much the same. We did some work based on some data my prof collected on separate trips to Tahiti and Peru. That guy really figures out how to get the most out of his career.

Nothing super exciting going on in my other classes. We're learning about quakes in geology. Interesting, but nothing earth-shattering. (Geddit?)

The Ducks were the number one team in the entire NHL for a couple of hours on Saturday night. They beat Buffalo (the worst team in the league) and stood atop the heap for a brief moment, then returned to third after the Avs and Sharks both played later that night.

Oh, we've been doing this thing recently — by "we" I mean the team, I always mean the team — where we assign various characters to people on the team. It started a few weeks ago with — well, we've done it off an on for a few years — but this year, it started with Hogwarts houses. After much deliberation, we sorted everyone on the guys' team into their proper house, and the breakdown ended up with five in each, except Ravenclaw, which only had two: me and Wilder.
LotR is tougher. There's this girl (Summer) who fits Legolas pretty well, and there are a couple of other decent fits, but nothing great. For a while, Chuck and I were considered to fit Merry and Pippin, respectively. Only recently, and after much thought, has it been realized that Chuck is more the Pippin and I the Merry in that relationship.
We actually got a lot of pretty good fits for Star Wars. I had no say in this, but most everyone else agrees that I am the Emperor. Probably the best fit is Taco being C3PO.
Recently, we've done Disney characters. Bryan is a perfect Roz (slug lady from Monsters, Inc). I'm the old dude from Up, and another Brian — different spelling, different guy — is the boy scout kid.

Bye.

  1. That picture of the race on the water looks really nice. If you were here in Berkeley I would say we should run down to the marina because that looks similar. It is also the only nice place to run to in Berkeley unless you count a 70 degree incline as a run. I prefer to think of it more as a hike, but I digress. The photo also reminds me of Moonrise Kingdom which I have only seen part of.

  2. "That dude" is Ryan Gosling, whom I nurture quite the soft spot for. I definitely see the parallels, but Chuck never took his mom to the Oscars, did he?

    Congrats on the great season.

My friends and I also did the Disney characters attribution, and I was given Mulan.

  3. "Let's get down to business"

    Yeah I can see it.

    "To defeat the Huns."

    Uhh... Rachael?

  5. Funny you bring up Moonrise Kingdom. My team is divided into people who love Wes Anderson and people who hate Wes Anderson (the director of that and a bunch of similar movies).

Mulan, of course. Tough not to agree.

  6. Did you say you hated or liked Wes Anderson, Derek? What side were you on? Also, lovely post. You have such a wonderful community of friend with your fellow runners. I miss you. And Chuck. And you and Chuck together.

  7. I can't wait for you to teach a class and assign data from your summer skiing trip in New Zealand.

  8. I did not like Moonrise Kingdom. Not at all. Sorry.
    Miss you too.

I suppose I could present a raster in which each cell's value corresponded to how much fun I was having when I skied over that particular cell. That would be a lot of data collecting, though.
